Naples day trips: Discover Capri & Sorrento Coast By Boat

We found on Trip Advisor this interesting review of Capri as the “World’s most beautiful tourist trap” (2009). “We arrived from Naples about mid morning. It was a beautiful springlike day in May 2008. We immediately got in a long line to take the local bus up to Anacapri where our b&b was located. After waiting for about 45 minutes a very nice Italian couple who had found a cab offered to share it with us. It cost us about the equivilent of $25 just to get up the hill a couple of klicks. The scenery was beautiful….”

It says anything we think you need to get only the best out of Capri by taking this tour that beats them all: an unforgettable day exploring Sorrento and the pearl Capri. Every spot, every cave, every shade of blue and every wave sound without the stress of a tourist trap.
The experience includes an enchanting land itineray covering Sorrento and the whole coast.

Naples day trips: Amalfi Coast Experience

Deemed an outstanding example of a Mediterranean landscape, the Amalfi Coast is one of Italy’s most piercing destinations. Here, mountains plunge into the sea in a nail-biting vertical scene of precipitous crags, cliff-clinging abodes and verdant woodland.

Its string of fabled towns read like a Hollywood cast list. There’s jet-set favourite Positano, a pastel-coloured cascade of chic boutiques, spritz-sipping pin-ups and sun-kissed sunbathers. Further east, ancient Amalfi lures with its Arabic-Norman cathedral, while mountaintop Ravello stirs hearts with its cultured villas and Wagnerian connection. To the west lies Amalfi Coast gateway Sorrento, a handsome cliff-top resort that has miraculously survived the onslaught of package tourism.

Naples day trips: Pompeii, Herculaneum & Vesuvius Walking Tour

Many travellers are interested in touring both archaeological sites, preferably in a single day. Though both are fascinating glimpses into the life of ancient Romans, unless you are an especially well-versed in this historic period, you can get a good idea of how a Roman city functioned before the eruption by visiting just one of these two.
Pompeii is the larger and more famous of the two, and is located closer to the Amalfi Coast. There are more visitors to the site than to Herculaneum, but since the city is so vast, you rarely get the sense of it being over-crowded.
Herculaneum is the smaller and more dense of the two, and is closer to the city of Naples.

Naples day trips: Herculaneum & Vesuvius Walking Tour

Journey back in time to the ancient Roman city of Herculaneum, buried beneath meters of burning ash during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79A.D. Visit the smouldering crater where the peak of this imposing mountain once loomed over the coastline.

Herculaneum’s fate runs parallel to that of Pompeii. Destroyed by an earthquake in AD 62, the AD 79 eruption of Mt Vesuvius saw it submerged in a 16m-thick sea of mud that essentially fossilised the city. This meant that even delicate items, such as furniture and clothing, were discovered remarkably well preserved. Tragically, the inhabitants didn’t fare so well; thousands of people tried to escape by boat but were suffocated by the volcano’s poisonous gases. Indeed, what appears to be a moat around the town is in fact the ancient shoreline. It was here in 1980 that archaeologists discovered some 300 skeletons, the remains of a crowd that had fled to the beach only to be overcome by the terrible heat of clouds surging down from Vesuvius.

Naples day trips: Pompeii & Vesuvius Walking Tour

Modern-day Pompeii (Pompei in Italian) may feel like a nondescript satellite of Naples, but it’s here that you’ll find Europe’s most compelling archaeological site: the ruins of Pompeii. Sprawling and haunting, the site is a stark reminder of the malign forces that lie deep inside Vesuvius.

Hike up Mount Vesuvius and then explore the UNESCO-listed ruins of Pompeii on a must-do day trip from Naples. Going at a steady pace, the hike includes a walk on the ridge of Italy’s famously feisty volcano, allowing incredible views down into the crater itself. After a pizza lunch, head to Pompeii to see the havoc that Mount Vesuvius reaped on it in AD 79. Tour the UNESCO-listed excavations, seeing fossils and well-preserved ruins while hearing the horrors that befell this intriguing ancient city.
